What is the thickness of the grate?
The grate is cut from 3/16-inch A36 steel plate and framed to produce a finished assembled thickness of approximately 1/2 inch.
What steel do you use?
All of our custom grill grates are fabricated from heavy-duty A36 food-grade carbon steel that offers outstanding strength, durability, and heat resistance.
Do you offer stainless steel grill grates?
No. We currently manufacture our custom grill grates exclusively from A36 carbon steel.
Can this grate be used as a replacement for another brand?
Yes. As long as your smoker, grill, or firebox accepts a grate measuring 17.5" L x 13.5" W x 1/2" Thick, it can serve as an excellent replacement. Customers commonly use our grates in Old Country BBQ Pits, Myron Mixon Smokers, and many custom-built smokers and grills.
Is this grate safe for direct food contact?
Yes. Our A36 steel grill grates are suitable for direct food contact when properly seasoned before use.
Can this grate support cast iron cookware?
Absolutely. The fully welded, framed construction easily supports Dutch ovens, cast iron skillets, griddles, and other heavy cookware.
Can I use this grate inside a firebox?
Yes. Many customers purchase these grates for use as firebox grates, charcoal grates, and heavy-duty replacement grates in offset smokers and custom pits.
How should I season my new grill grate?
Coat the grate with a high-smoke-point cooking oil and heat it through several cooking cycles before regular use. Periodic reseasoning helps maintain performance and reduce surface oxidation.
How do I prevent rust?
Clean the grate after each cook, keep it lightly coated with cooking oil, and store it in a dry environment. Light surface rust is normal for carbon steel and can easily be removed before reseasoning.
Do you make custom sizes?
Yes. We manufacture custom grill grates in virtually any size. Please contact us if you need dimensions different from those listed.
Can you determine what size grate my smoker needs?
No. Customers are responsible for providing the exact measurements required. We cannot determine grate sizes for individual smoker or grill models.
How long does shipping take?
Please allow approximately 1-2 weeks from the order date for fabrication and shipping since every grate is cut to order.

With over 35 years of smoking experience, we started DDR BBQ Supply with a simple goal: to help others cook better barbecue. We've spent decades learning what works and what doesn't, and we apply that knowledge to every product we carry. From high-performance grills and smokers to carefully selected rubs, sauces, and tools, everything we offer is something we believe in and use ourselves. We don’t believe in cutting corners or selling gear we wouldn’t rely on during our own backyard cooks and when we compete in BBQ competitions.
