Frequently Asked Questions

Lifting the fuel off the floor lets air reach the coals from underneath, which means a hotter, cleaner burn and far less ash smothering the fire. The result is easier lighting, steadier temperatures, and fewer of the stalls that happen when coals choke on their own ash. It is one of the cheapest upgrades that genuinely changes how an offset cooks.
Measure the inside of your firebox: width, depth, and the door opening it has to pass through, and leave a small gap on each side for expansion when the steel gets hot. Many of our grates are sized for popular offsets like the Old Country Brazos and Pecos, and a universal grate can be trimmed or shimmed to fit a custom pit. Matching those measurements is the whole job.
A welded bar grate uses thick steel bars with wider gaps, which maximizes airflow and is easy to clean, while expanded metal has a tighter pattern that holds smaller pieces of charcoal and wood without them dropping through. Heavy bar grates are the common choice for wood and lump fires; expanded metal helps if you burn a lot of smaller fuel. Both outperform a bare firebox floor.
Thick steel is built to take repeated high heat, and raised feet plus an expansion gap help it handle the stress without deforming. To get the longest life, knock the ash off after cooks, brush it clean, keep it covered and dry between uses, and a light coat of high-temp oil fights rust. Replace it only if it eventually warps badly, which thick stock resists for a long time.
Yes. Beyond the stocked sizes, custom-cut grates are available, and you simply provide your firebox dimensions by email at info@ddrbbqsupply.com so the grate is fabricated to fit. That way even a one-off pit gets the airflow benefits without you trying to force a stock size to work.

With over 35 years of smoking experience, we started DDR BBQ Supply with a simple goal: to help others cook better barbecue. We've spent decades learning what works and what doesn't, and we apply that knowledge to every product we carry. From high-performance grills and smokers to carefully selected rubs, sauces, and tools, everything we offer is something we believe in and use ourselves. We don’t believe in cutting corners or selling gear we wouldn’t rely on during our own backyard cooks and when we compete in BBQ competitions.
